I am so excited to share an interview with Boone Brux! She’s not only a great writer but an awesome person all around. I’ve had a great time chatting with her. Check out below for salacious details like what’s coming next in her Grim Reality Series and who her girl crush is.
I reviewed To Catch Her Death at the beginning of this week, so I’m calling this an all Boone, all Grim week. The only thing better would be to have the next book in the series in one hand and a plate of chocolate layer cake in the other.
Zen: What makes you pick up a book to read?
Boone Brux: Usually it’s the cover first and then the blurb. Or if I know I already love the author they’re sometimes an automatic buy.
Zen: What kind of characters keep you reading?
Boone Brux: Funny or if there’s serious chemistry between the hero and heroine. I also love secondary characters. Sometimes they’re the best characters in the book.
Zen: When you write a heroine who can kick all kinds of ass, how do you keep her a sympathetic character?
Boone Brux: She definitely has to have flaws. And if she possess some kind of paranormal power, she only has one or two. Otherwise she’d be this undefeatable character. Not knowing whethershe’s going to win or not keeps the tension high. Also, she has to have things she cares about so much that she’d do anything to save them. Usually, in my books it’s people, kids, family, or saving humanity. You know, the usual.
Zen: Is it more difficult to write a love interest for a badass woman?
Boone Brux: No, my only guideline is that he has to be able to keep up with her and in some way balance her out. No wimps. That being said, he could be a complete geek, who doesn’t fight, but his mind is like a super brain and can help her defeat evil with it. And obviously his big brain turns her on. It’s all a matter of balance.
Zen: What was the last thing you read and loved?
Boone Brux: Rebecca Zanetti’s vampire series. I took them on vacation to Hawaii. Now that was some good reading.
Zen: Who are your favorite badass women in movies?
Boone Brux: I think my favorite is Kate Beckinsale. I loved her in Underworld and Van Helsing. I’d switch teams for that girl. At the other end of the spectrum, I adore Melissa McCarthy in Heat. I might have a bit of a girl crush on her too.
Zen: When can we expect #2 in the Grim Reality Series?
Boone Brux: Soon, very soon! No set date yet. The next book is actually the young adult spin off with Lisa Carron’s daughter, Bronte, titled Sudden Death. But right on the heels of that will be Styx and Stoned, another Lisa Carron story. She’s off to Vegas for a Grim Reaper Services convention and another top secret mission that might end up being too much for her to handle.
